Six participate in SkillsUSA leadership conference

Six Old Colony students participated in the SkillsUSA Fall State Leadership Conference in Marlborough, MA, this past November 20, 21, and 22, 2006. Community service and leadership development were the focus of the conference. All six students achieved their leadership awards with the highest possible score.

OC students win 4 SkillsUSA medals at 2007 state competition

The Old Colony Chapter of SkillsUSA was very successful at the State Skill and Leadership Conference, held on April 26-28, 2007, at Marlborough, MA. Competing against other vocational students at the state conference, Old Colony had 16 participants in 8 contests and captured 4 medals. The results were as follows:

  • Michael Cormier (Mattapoisett) – Bronze Medal – Computer Programming
  • Richard Pemberton (Freetown) – Bronze Medal – Carpentry
  • Jade Worthington (Acushnet) – Silver Medal – Office Computer Applications
  • Perry Wood (Rochester) – Gold Medal – Electronics Applications
  • Perry (pictured at right) will now represent Massachusetts at the SkillsUSA National Skills and Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 25-29, 2007.

2007 SkillsUSA District Competition

On March 13, 2007, 75 student-members of Old Colony’s Chapter of Skills-USA participated in the district competition held at Upper Cape Regional Vocational Technical High School in Bourne, MA. Old Colony pitted its skills and knowledge in 18 trade areas against other area vocational schools. The Cougars’ efforts were well rewarded, as Old Colony competitors took home 4 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. Congratulations to all competing students!

2006-2007 Old Colony SkillsUSA Competition

On January 19, 2007, Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School held its annual schoolwide SkillsUSA Awards Ceremony. Students in Old Colony’s twelve vocational training areas competed in twenty-one skill competitions covering various aspects of each vocational program. All award winners will now be eligible to compete at the district competition to be held March 13, 2007, at Upper Cape Regional Vocational Technical High School.

SkillsUSA Officers for 2006-2007

Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School held an election to select SkillsUSA officers from the membership. Massachusetts SkillsUSA is a national organization which sponsors competitions for students at local, regional, state, national, and international levels. Each year, students from Old Colony represent the school in competition.

National Honor Society wins 8th Outstanding Chapter Award

Old Colony Chapter of the National Honor Society has been selected as a recipient of an Outstanding Chapter Award for the sixth year in a row. The Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association State NHS Committee presents this award to local chapters for “exemplifying the true spirit of National Honor Society ideals through demonstration of outstanding scholarship, leadership, character and service.”

This is the eighth Outstanding Chapter Award for the Old Colony chapter in the last ten years. The chapter has also received seven National Service Awards.

The Chapter received the award at the NHS State Leadership Conference held at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts on April 10, 2007. The conference was held for advisors and students of local chapters. Workshops were held on such topics as Time Management, Surviving Freshman Year at College, The Importance of Credit, and Creative Fundraising.

Neil Andre (Assonet), Alex Buckley (Rochester), Samantha Clarke (East Freetown), and Michael Poland (Lakeville) represented the Old Colony Chapter at the conference.

NHS elects 2006-2007 officers

Four members of the Old Colony Chapter of the National Honor Society were recently elected to serve as officers for the 2006-2007 school year. The officers will assume responsibility for leading the Society to achieve its varied service goals.

Elected president was Samantha E. Clarke of East Freetown, vice-president Janelle L. Gifford of Acushnet, treasurer Jeffrey A. Cormier of Acushnet, and secretary Nicholas P. DeBrum of Lakeville.

The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in three-fourths of the nation’s high schools. Local Chapters are sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Old Colony students capture medals at State SkillsUSA Competition

Old Colony’s Chapter of SkillsUSA participated in the Massachusetts Skills Championships and Leadership Conference in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on April 27-29, 2006. Twenty-seven students represented OC and competed against the finest vocational students in the state. In the Web Design competition, the team of Adam Veary(sophomore/Freetown) and Matthew Willett(sophomore/Carver) took the Gold Medal.

The two state champions will now compete for national recognition at the Skills USA National Skills Championships and Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 19-24, 2006. Senior Steven Cleary (Rochester) won a silver medal in Precision Machining. Congratulations to the medal winners and to all of the Old Colony students who participated in the state competition!
