2005 SkillsUSA National Championships – Web Design

The team of Jeffrey Golenski (senior) and Jeffrey Cormier (sophomore), both of Acushnet, made the entire Old Colony community proud as they won the Bronze Medal at the annual SkillsUSA National Championships, held in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 21-24, 2005. Competing in the Web Design competition, Jeff G. & Jeff C. completed a written test, organized a storyboard, participated in an interview with judges, and created a functional website for a non-profit organization. Representing Massachusetts, the Old Colony team placed third (behing New Jersey & Oregon) in a field of 32 teams of the top high school web designers in the country.

The winners of the annual SkillsUSA Championships in WEB DESIGN were announced Friday evening, June 24, 2005 at the Awards Ceremony of the fortieth SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The Conference was held June 21 June 24, 2005, at the Municipal Auditorium, the Kemper Arena, H. Roe Bartle Hall, the downtown Marriott and the downtown Radisson in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 4, 600 outstanding career and technical education students joined in the excitement of the hands-on competition in eighty different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

Working against the clock and each other, the participants proved their expertise in job skills for occupations such as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. There were also competitions in leadership skills, such as extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedures.

SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management and are designed to test the skills need for a successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Safety practices and procedure an area of great concern to labor and management alike are judged and graded and constitute a portion of a contestant’s score.

The Web Design contest evaluated each contestant’s preparation for employment and recognizes outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the field of Web design. Two-person teams assume the roles of Web Designer, Webmaster and Web Developer. The 2005 contest requires each team to build a completely function Web site for a non-profit agency. The focus will be on Web Site accessibility.

The members of the national technical committee for the Web Design contest include CHAIR Bill Cullifer, World Organization of Webmasters (CA); Kirsti Aho, Macromedia (CA); Lisa Deakes, Adobe Systems Inc. (CA); Philip Ledgerwood (MO); Steve Loethen, MicroSoft Corporation (KS); Bob Schoenherr, Systems Inc. (CA); and Evelyn Zahas (MD). Other supporting organizations include Adobe.
