OC Superintendent named to MAVA committee

A Southcoast Superintendent has been appointed to the Liaison, Outreach, & Recognition Committee for the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators for the 2004-2005 school year.

Old Colony Tech Superintendent-Director, David J. Ferreira, was appointed to the committee which promotes and recognizes excellence in vocational-technical education across the Commonwealth.

Superintendent-Director Ferreira has been appointed to serve as one of two MAVA members on the Commission for Career & Technical Institutions of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Machine & Tool aims for NIMS certification

The Machine & Tool Technology Department at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School will be moving forward with the final phase for National Certification. The National Certification in NIMS (National Institute for Metal Working Skills) will take place on October 26 & 27, 2004. Mr. Michael Tamasi of Accu Rounds in Avon will be the chairperson for the two-day observation and review for the NIMS Certification. Mr. Tamasi will be assisted by two additional craftsmen.

Old Colony’s Machine & Tool Technology Department will be one of the first vocational schools in the area to receive National Certification in NIMS.

CIT instructor presents at statewide conference

A member of the Computer Information Technology Department at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School was a presenter at a recent statewide conference.

CIT Instructor, Jacqueline Machamer, spoke at the Eastern Business Educator’s Association Conference on Friday, October 15th in Braintree. She was invited to present information pertaining to the Information Technology Foundation Concepts Curriculum which she helped develop for the Bristol Tech Prep Consortium.

Mrs. Machamer has been actively involved in the development of the state frameworks for information technology.

School nurse achieves national certification


The Administration at Old Colony Regional Tech is proud to announce that school nurse, Paula Ward, has achieved national certification by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses. This voluntary credential serves to highlight Mrs. Ward’s commitment to the profession and her support for the needs of children.

Mrs. Ward, a Mattapoisett resident, has served the staff and students at the Rochester technical school since 2001.

Automotive seniors pass ASE test

Nine Old Colony Automotive Department seniors recently passed the Automotive Service Excellence Test. The ASE test is an EPA-approved program that meets Section 609 of the Clean Air Act of 1990. This certification allows our students to operate Automotive Air Condition Recovery and Recycling equipment at their place of employment. The following Automotive Technology students passed the ASE Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Shop Test:

SkillsUSA VICA officers elected

The SkillsUSA VICA Chapter at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School completed its election this year. Elected to serve as officers of the organization were:

Automotive students to compete in Boston

Old Colony Automotive junior Glenn Bassett (Lakeville) and sophomore James Richard (Acushnet) will be participating in the statewide 2004 Massachusetts Automotive Dealers Association Underclassmen Competition in Boston.

Glenn and James will be undertaking the Hands-On Competition, which will be done on simulated vehicles.

Automotive scores for Old Colony students ranged from 10 to 15 points higher than last year’s students.
