New Freshman Orientation 6/6/16 & Math Placement Test

On Monday, June 6, 2016 from 6 – 8 pm Old Colony will be hosting the New Freshman Orientation. All students accepted to the Class of 2020 will receive a welcome and overview the Old Colony. The theme for the evening is “expectations”. Students and their families will learn what is expected of students in all areas of Old Colony life and what students and families can expect from Old Colony. We look forward to welcoming our new students and helping them become familiar with Old Colony.

Also, all incoming freshmen must complete a math placement test in order for them to be placed in the correct math class for which they are best prepared. There is no preparation needed on your child’s part for this test. It is simply an assessment of their current math skills level. This placement test is being conducted at Old Colony on Saturday 6/4/16 from 9 am – 11 am. Should your child finish before 11:00, we recommend he/she bring a book to read or a cell phone to call for a ride. We are asking for an 8:45 drop off as testing begins promptly at 9. Unfortunately we will not be able to test students who arrive late. Please email our Guidance Department at lsherman@oldcolony.us with your child’s name to confirm they will be in attendance for this testing. There will be an alternate date over the next few weeks should the 4th be unavailable for your family.

Old Colony’s Robotics Team to Compete in Vex Robotics – Southern New England Nothing But Net Championship.

In only its second year of existence, the Old Colony Robotics Club has qualified to compete in the Southern New England championship. The Robotics Club began in 2014-15 with the donation of a Vex robot. Under the volunteer direction of Mr. Dan Brush, Electronics Engineering Instructor and Mr. Bill Trimble, Science teacher, a small but committed group of students spent countless hours preparing their robots for battle. On January 9th, 2016 at Bristol Community College, the team of Seniors Nick Smith, Jesse Goodwin, Sophomores John Barnes, Tanner Safford, Jasper Tan and Freshman Ben Jensen qualified their robot. On March 5 & 6th, the team will travel to Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester to compete against 67 other qualifying high school teams from MA, CT and RI. The March competition is a qualifying event for the World Championship in Louisville, KY in April.

Frosty Runner Road Race is a Success!

Old Colony hosted the 4th annual Frosty Runner Road Race on Saturday, January 23rd.  Despite the weather predictions (of a blizzard!), we hosted 127 people for the 10.5 mile run and the 5K walk/run.  Although the skies were gray and the winds fierce, the runners had a great time and stated that they look forward to this event next year!

Frosty Runner is on!

As of 3:45 pm on Friday 1/22/16, Frosty Runner road race on Saturday 1/23/16 is a go!  While we expect there may be flurries throughout the morning, we are anticipating safe conditions for the race.  If we learn of a change in the storm that would make it unsafe and we have to cancel,  there will be an update on this page.  If no other update appears, the race is on!  See you Saturday morning!  Day of race registrations welcome!  Details here.

Bullying and Cyberbullying Surveys

During the next two weeks, we will be conducting a survey of faculty, students, and parents about bullying and cyberbullying that may occur in and out of our school.  MA Dept. of Education requires that we do this at least every 4 years.   Please click on the link below to take the 5 minute survey. into your web browser to take this online survey, which only takes about 5 minutes to complete, and the results will be shared in a future newsletter. Your results are anonymous and will be sent to both Old Colony, as well as the MA Aggression Reduction Center, which is located at Bridgewater State University. We would appreciate it if you complete this survey by 12/11/15.
