ACCUPLACER Testing

Accuplacer® is a test often given to students to determine their readiness for college-level courses. Many students will take Accuplacer® to assess their skills in English Writing, Reading, and Math. Unlike many other tests, Accuplacer® is an adaptive test administered on computers. Many colleges will ask new students to take an Accuplacer® test to help place them in the proper courses, but some high school students may take the tests as well. As a member of the  Massachusetts Secondary Postsecondary CVTE Linkage Consortium, Old Colony has been provided the opportunity to  early ACCUPLACER  test our seniors and juniors to early-identify students who may need subject remediation. Test dates have been scheduled for October 18th, November 15th and December 13th. There is no cost for the test and it will take place during the school day. Seniors and juniors who are interested in taking the test should sign up in the Guidance Office. For more information regarding the ACCUPLACER, SAT’s, PSAT’s please  click on the following link: Accuplacer.

Old Colony Participates in Materials Science Camp

Old Colony’s Metal Fabrication and Joining teacher, Kris Garcia, attended the first-ever ASM Materials Science camp at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston during the second week of July.  Twenty-two teachers, mainly science teachers or technical-education teachers, attended the 5-day workshop.  They learned the basics of Materials Science and its applications, and conducted many labs and activities which elucidated the properties of materials, and which are low-cost and suitable for students.

Materials Science involves physics, chemistry and engineering and is called ‘the enabling technology’: most inventions rely on some new material with special properties.  New England is a center of Materials Science research and development work, and there is always a need for experts in this field.  All those attending said at the end of the week, that they had learned many new ways to engage their students in the coming school year, and they thought that many of the activities would be “fun and fascinating” for the students, and easy to integrate into their lessons.Garcia

The camp was free for the teachers.  Major contributions to the camp’s organization were made by the Educational Foundation, and the Boston and Rhode Island chapters of ASM International, the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and also by local companies H.C. Starck Inc. of Newton, Instron Corp. of Norwood and Wyman-Gordon of Grafton, as well as Wentworth Institute of Technology.   For more information see the ASM website at www.asminternational.org.

CIS Students Launch LakeCAM Website

LakeCAM

Junior Web Team: Jared, Cory, Ben, and Jose

On June 21st, 2013 LakeCAM unveiled their new website design, which was designed and created by Computer Information Systems students from Old Colony RVT High School. Since March 2013, the students had been working to revamp the LakeCAM website with the help of LakeCAM President Bob Marshall and Executive Director Allen Russell. While the students received direction from their teacher, Mr. Ryan Robidoux, they designed, developed and launched the site completely on their own. The four students that worked on the web design project – Jared, Cory, Ben, and Jose – each received $200 scholarships for their efforts on the site.

Check out their great work on the LakeCAM website!

Mandated BMI Screening for 10th Graders

Old Colony will be conducting the State mandated BMI Screening for 10th graders during the first week of June.   The purpose of this screening is to identify signs of possible weight related issues. A simple height and weight will be taken and recorded.  Complete privacy will be provided.   It is not a diagnostic service but a program to find young people who may need further evaluation.

If a child has unusual findings, the parent/guardian will be notified and asked to take their child to a physician as a precaution.

If a parent/guardian does not wish to have their son/daughter participate, they must download this form, sign it and return it to the  school nurse before June 1, 2013.
