Old Colony NHS Chapter wins 8th national service project award

The Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was awarded a national Outstanding Service Project Award as part of the National Honor Society Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, November 9-11, 2007. Thirteen students represented Old Colony at the fifteenth annual conference.

This is the eighth time and fifth year in a row that Old Colony has received a national Outstanding Service Project Award. This year the award was received for the service project Beading the Odds. This project involved making beaded bracelets for both adults and children which were then donated to a local women?s shelter.

Old Colony was one of ten NHS Chapters that received national awards for outstanding service to their school and community this year, and is the only chapter in the country to have won eight Outstanding Service Project awards.

Nearly 800 National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society members and faculty advisors from across the country participated in the National Conference held this year in Atlanta, Georgia. During the three-day conference, delegates attended workshop sessions on leadership, NHS values, effective student projects, and heard presentations from nationally known speakers. In addition, members networked with student leaders and advisors from schools across the nation, discussed social, educational, and political issues and exchanged ideas.

The members of the Old Colony chapter of the NHS who attended the conference were: Nicholas Abaray, Chad Crumley, Jonathan Ferreira, Tyler Guilbeault, Kendra Murray, and Steven Verronneau of Acushnet, Joshua Lang, and Samantha Lucas of Lakeville, Nicholas Rice and Melanie Cole of Carver, Dana Collins and Christopher Faustino of Rochester, and Nicolas Nelson of Mattapoisett. Members were accompanied by four chaperones: Mrs. Christine Watling, Mrs. Nancy Castino, Mr. Paul Sleight and Mr. Paul Brodeur.
