Metal Fab students view pipe welding demonstration

Al Caron and Jon Marland, union welders from Local 51 United Association of Plumbers Pipefitters and Refrigeration (East Providence, RI) presented an all-day demonstration of Pipe Welding to the junior class in the school’s Metal Fabrication & Joining Technologies Department on Nov. 20, 2008. The professional union welders also demonstrated SMAW and GTAW techniques.

Al and Jon gave a complete demonstration of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Shielded Metal Arc Welding of 6′ schedule 40 and 80 pipe to the junior welding students. They spent the entire school day (6 hours) working with every student individually teaching them the proper technique of pipe welding in various positions. The pictures shown are the junior class with Al and Jon and the other is welding Instructor Doug Desrochers and Michael Richard with Al and Jon. I would like to mention the welding machines that were used for the demonstration were two Miller XMT?s that were donated to the school this past September by Al and Jon from Local 51 United Association Of Plumbers Pipefitters and Refrigeration. Each machine is valued at $2,500.
