Cosmetology seniors obtain state licensure

The entire senior class of Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School’s Cosmetology Department has obtained their Massachusetts State Board of Cosmetology Operator’s License.

Upon completion of 1,000 hours, Cosmetology students are given a mock examination in preparation for their actual State Board exam. The taking and passing of the State Board exam is required, prior to students exiting the program. The requirement for the Cosmetology exam has been in effect since 2000. The Cosmetology Advisory Board felt that this component, added to the curriculum, would ensure top quality students.

Students graduating from the Cosmetology Program can receive their Class 1 license in two years. A Massachusetts Class 1 license offers them the opportunity to become salon owners. Old Colony has several graduates in the area who are now salon owners: “Sisters” (Paul Church), “Nickie’s Hair Design” (Nickie Beaulieu), “Hairlines” (Marsha Garcia), and “Headquarters” (Stephanie Zykowicz). Old Colony’s Cosmetology Department also employs two former graduates: Kimberly (Mull) Lopes and Tammy (Barboza) Hoyle as instructors.

The following students have successfully passed the state exam:

  • Acushnet: Jessica Frates, Cassandra Marujo, & Johnelle Roderick
  • Carver: Kerri Lapham & Kristen Spencer
  • Rochester: Karissa Weigel
  • Freetown: Ashley Bianchini & Amy Caldwell
  • Lakeville: Jamie Lane
