Senior selected for MVA award

CIT Department senior Stephen Bernat has been selected to receive the 2005-2006 Massachusetts Vocational Association (MVA) Award. Stephen is now eligible for a $500.00 cash award based upon his leadership ability in school, as well as his vocational and academic excellence. Stephen is involved with many school organizations, including the Student Council (four-year member, president for the past two years), the Peer Leadership Group for (four-year member,current secretary), and the Web Team.

Stephen has also been an active participant in athletics throughout his four years at Old Colony. One of the top high school golfers in the southeastern Massachusetts area, Stephen played four years on the varsity golf team, including two years as captain. His superior play earned him Mayflower League all-star status three times and he was twice named to the New Bedford Standard-Times “Super Golf Team.” Stephen is a current member of the Old Colony basketball team (his fourth year, current squad captain) and will start his fourth year on the school’s baseball team in the spring.

Stephen’s other achievements include selection as Old Colony’s student representative in the annual Massachusetts Student Government Day (senior year), selection as a two-time Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Sportsmanship Award winner, and participation in SkillsUSA for four years. He also received a Certificate of Merit from the Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award Program in his senior year for his outstanding community service contributions helping senior citizens learn computer skills.
